Facet Injections in West Palm Beach, FL

Back pain and other symptoms may be caused by inflammation around the facet joints. Board-certified neurosurgeon and founder of The Spine Center, Charles S. Theofilos, MD, may recommend facet injections for the condition. The quick, easy treatment has resulted in exceptional outcomes for men and women in West Palm Beach, Port St. Lucie, Palm Beach Gardens and south Florida, as well as our international patients.

What are Facet Joints?

The facet joints are the tiny joints where the back of the spine connects together. They can become damaged by abnormal stress, and/or trauma. When they become damaged, they develop inflammation which can then lead to pain. Extending the spine when inflammation is present, such as looking up or leaning backwards and rotating your spine, forces these joints to grind together, causing additional pain. Fortunately, there may be relief from the pain without surgery.

How Do Facet Joint Injections Work?

Since the inflammation caused by damaged facet joints is the culprit, targeting it can often relieve the symptoms you may be feeling. This is done by injecting a small amount of steroid directly into the irritated joint. Over the next few days the steroid will decrease the inflammation, hopefully bringing you some relief.

In getting rid of the inflammation your body gets a chance to actually attempt to heal itself. We can’t tell you how much your body will heal, but we can certainly give it all the opportunity it needs to try.

What is the Procedure for Facet Joint Injections?

Dr. Theofilos performs facet joint injections in our office. He numbs the area where the injection is to be made. A special technique known as “fluoroscopy” is used to guide his injections. The solution he uses contains a combination of lidocaine for your comfort and anti-inflammatory medication. These injections can be performed at his office under supervised anesthesia IV sedation to allow for a pain-free experience.

What Should I Expect After a Facet Injection?

You will rest for up to 15 to 30 minutes after the procedure. Next, we ask you to perform some basic movements to allow us to assess the effectiveness of the injections. You may not notice any changes in the discomfort for a few hours. Please keep a record on how much and how long pain relief occurs to discuss at the next consultation with Dr. Theofilos.

What Happens During a Consultation for Facet Joint Injections?

Dr. Theofilos does not provide treatment until he performs a thorough physical examination. The appointment may take one to three hours. This is to ensure facet joint injections are the best treatment option for you. Facet injections may be administered during the consultation, or we may schedule an appointment for a future date.

After the appointment, we review the cost of your treatment, including medical insurance coverage and financing through LendingUSA®.
