Three-Level Spinal Disc Disease

This young female was involved in an accident at which time she developed mechanical neck pain, pain going down her arms and significant headaches. She tried physical therapy, chiropractic care, anti-inflammatory medication, epidural injections and activity modification with no relief. An MRI revealed three large disc herniations in her neck at C4-5, C5-6 and C6-7 compressing her nerves and spinal cord. With progressive weakness and numbness in her arms, and because of the length of time she had suffered, she wished to proceed with a surgical procedure to help alleviate her symptoms.

This is a classic case of a young person with three-level spinal disc disease. Traditionally, a three-level cervical fusion would have been performed. Unfortunately, this would limit her motion in her neck as well as markedly increase the chance of her needing additional surgery at C3-4 in the future due to the additional stress applied on it. Therefore, the better option was to perform a hybrid surgery which is a combination of an artificial disc and a fusion. As you can see in the xray, this patient received an artificial disc at two levels in her neck, C4-5 and C5-6 and a fusion at C6-7. The artificial disc helps protect the C3-4 disc from any further stress and prevents significant loss of range of motion. After one week, the patient’s collar was removed (vs. three months after a fusion) and she went back to a normal life with normal activities. Her arm symptoms, neck pain and headaches completely resolved.

I first visited Dr. Theofilos in January 2018. I had started epidural injections in Kentucky for my sciatica. When I arrived in Florida to “winter”, my sciatica continued to cause me severe pain. My son recommended Dr. Theofilos. Dr. Theofilos ordered an MRI, and he consulted with me on his findings. He said he could continue with the epidurals as I requested, but he was not confident that this was the best solution to my sciatica problem. Dr. Theofilos did two sets of epidurals, and I was still in pain. I took Dr. Theofilos’s recommendation, and I agreed to have minimally invasive L5 S1 TLIF surgery with bone marrow aspiration. My sciatica pain and numbness in my legs and feet was gone the day after surgery!!!

The office staff was great, especially Natalia, the surgical coordinator. I worked closely with her to make sure all the required tests were completed prior to surgery. She was always available to answer any questions, and I had complete confidence in her. The doctor was always on time for my appointments. Dr. Theofilos has a good bedside manner, and he gave me confidence that he could fix my problem. I would definitely recommend Dr. Theofilos to anyone that is tired of back pain and just wants to live a pain-free life again. I am a 100% satisfied customer.

She really did not believe a doctor in Florida could help her with her pain. She researched a multitude of doctors online and via recommendations in Florida and found Dr. Theofilos. Dr. Theofilos’ conservative approach began with injections at first and based on her condition resulted in back surgery. After surgery, days later she got her life back and was able to stand straight and be pain-free for the first time in two years.

Pam has been a long time patient of Dr. Theofilos from the time she was in a car accident about twenty years ago. She had a compression fracture of her back and over the years her sacrum region has been causing her some discomfort. After a ski trip last year, her sacrum region was very inflamed and painful.
